Ephrata Cloister

Visitor Maps

The Ephrata Cloister was a religious community, established in 1732 by Conrad Beissel, and was home to nearly 80 Brothers and Sisters.

These new Sisters’ House maps improve wayfinding on the second and third floors by highlighting key features. The revised layout guides visitors through the space in a more natural, efficient flow.

For example, the open layout of the third floor naturally guides visitors to the right upon ascending the stairs. The tour follows this pattern and leads visitors through the right side first before looping back to the left.

The intentional order of features 3 and 4 allows visitors to compare the different flooring types used on the third floor, a contrast that can only be seen within this area of the Sisters’ House.

Civil War Medicine Reenactment

The Civil War Medicine Program hosted a living history reenactment in which a historical interpreter portrayed a Union medical officer.

The design draws inspiration from broadside advertisements, or single sheet prints used to inform the public about current political news and events. The poster combines late 19th century typography trends, such as large, commanding typefaces and a wide variety of fonts, with current design trends.

Women’s Suffrage in Lebanon County Reenactment

The Justice Bell also hosted a living history reenactment of the the Women’s Suffrage Movement as it moved through the county in 1915.

Similarly, this design draws inspiration from advertisements of the era in which newspapers and magazines were the main platforms for advertising. Ads were primarily black and white, and visual elements had begun to take precedence over typography.
