The Process
1.
Historic Research & Inspiration
To establish an authentic vintage scrapbook aesthetic, I researched historical scrapbooks and their use of photographs, printed materials, and personal ephemera. One notable example was Jessie Parker’s scrapbooks, created between 1899 and 1916, which combine newspaper clippings, family photographs, and paper keepsakes.
I drew inspiration from Jessie Parker’s layered compositions and their personal, collected quality to create a vintage scrapbook of Florence’s history for a modern museum audience.
2.
Archival Textures & Materials
To capture the look and feel of the period, I scanned materials from my own family archives, including blank book pages from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and historical photo frames dating to the era. Rather than relying on digital effects or generic stock textures, I incorporated these authentic materials directly into the exhibit design, preserving the natural wear, paper grain, and imperfections of the originals. These archival elements helped create a scrapbook aesthetic rooted in the materials and visual character of the time period.
3.
Content Integration & Layout Design
With the historical research and archival materials established, I brought these elements together with the historical content provided for the exhibit. I layered photographs and text into scrapbook-inspired compositions. The result blends the character of historical scrapbooks with a cohesive exhibit design that brings Florence, Arizona’s history to life.
